Commemoration of the Victims of Communism

The Cossack Congress of America was among the NGOs and embassies commemorating the 100 Mio victims of Communism at an event organized by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation in Washington DC on June 12. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, chairmen of the foreign affairs committees of the parliaments of Nordic and Baltic countries and diplomats from 20 embassies were in attendance. The Memorial was dedicated by President George W. Bush on June 12, 2007, the 20th anniversary of President Reagan's "tear down this wall" speech at the Brandenburg Gate. During this year’s ceremony, The Victims of Communism Foundation presented the Truman-Reagan Medal of Freedom to Chinese dissident Dr. Yang Jianli. Mr. Jianli is a survivor of the 1989 massacre at Tienanmen Square. He was a political prisoner from 2002-2007.
The wreath of the Cossack Congress in the Kuban and Don colors was laid down in front of the bronze statue, “the Goddess of democracy”.
